I've posted a number of links relevant to the session I gave last week on our Tech-Ed page here. This includes the sample code which is an additional selection of samples than those which appear in the 32feet.NET package itself. The session covered the latest v2.3 release of the library and development continues on the next version based on your feedback.

One of the items of feedback I got for the session was the confusion between Personal Area Networking as a concept and the Bluetooth PAN Profile (Which supports Network Access Point, Group Networking and PAN User). Windows Mobile supports a limited subset of this profile to support the Internet Sharing application which was added in Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU3 but is often documented as a new feature in Windows Mobile 6. There is no exposed API to programmatically interact with the BT PAN profile, however there is an API for Internet Sharing which can be used to start/stop a sharing connection. I'm investigating the best way to add this to a future version of the library.

I was delighted to find out this week that my session on Personal Area Networking was selected for Tech-Ed Developers this year. The session will cover a range of networking topics including of course Bluetooth. There will be a selection of demos which will support audience participation. It looks like I'll be in good company too, the Windows Mobile track will have a wide range of topics which will enable you to build compelling applications with the latest tools and technologies. You can search the session list here.

The schedule for Tech Ed is now set. Now, I can't compete with Daniel on quantity, but hopefully can equal him on quality. However this requires help from you - I am hosting an interactive session and so you can help steer the direction of the session (within the scope of networking and Windows Mobile of course). If you have any particular topics that you would like to see addressed then please let me know via the comments on this post, or via email (there is a contact link on this page). I'm going to bring with me a selection of code samples and some demos including some interactive Bluetooth content (so bring your Windows Mobile (or other Bluetooth equipped) devices along. Here are the details:-

Tue Nov 6 09:00 - 10:15 Room 131 MED01-IS An Open Discussion of Networking Technologies within Windows Mobile

I look forward to seeing you there!

In November Microsoft will be hosting the twin conferences of Tech Ed Developers and Tech Ed IT Forum in Barcelona. Tech Ed Developers runs the week of 5th to 9th and covers 14 different tracks, one of which is Mobile & Embedded. This will cover the latest versions of all of Microsoft's Mobile & Embedded products from the .NET Micro Framework through to Windows Mobile, Windows Embedded CE and Robotics studio, and of course the .NET Compact Framework.

This year I'll be delivering a session on networking technologies available to Windows Mobile developers. This will cover a broad spectrum from personal area networking (Bluetooth and IrDA) through to cellular network specific (SMS, GPRS etc) and internet standards (FTP, HTTP etc). We will look at which technologies are appropriate for which scenarios, the relative costs and how to implement them. It's going to be an interactive session and will include plenty of code snippets and an interactive demo or two.

My co-authors Andy Wigley and Daniel Moth will also be delivering sessions in the Mobile & Embedded track and we plan to get together for a book signing during the event. Registration for the conference is available with a €300 off the full price until 28th September.

Following on from the developer contest I mentioned a while ago, Motorola are running a series of developer summits later this year. They will be covering development across their range of platforms and devices, including Windows Mobile. They will have a UK event in London on the 9th of November, which conflicts with Tech Ed Developers 2007 in Barcelona which I'm already committed to - more details on that to follow...

We've finished all the writing for the book, and it's now winging it's way to the printers. This week I finished converting all my sample code to Visual Basic so that we'll have two versions of all the sample code in the book. I have to thank all of the people behind the book, the team at MS Press and my fellow authors for making my first writing experience such a pleasant one. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing the finished book later in May. Just when I thought it was safe to kick back and relax I'll be off to Las Vegas for MEDC 2007 on Monday.

This years event promises to be a great one - lots of content on Visual Studio Orcas, .NETCF 3.5 and a refreshed version of the Windows Mobile 6 SDKs. I'll be taking part in one of the panel discussion session, along with my fellow authors, members of the .NET Compact Framework team and OpenNETCF. The session is on both Wednesday and Thursday so you should find one to fit your schedule.

I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas!

I've posted a Beta build of 32feet.NET to the Files section of the site. Please read the file description for a high-level list of changes. This release is the first to be built against .NET v2.0 and will resolve issues encountered with using the v1.x library from a .NET v2.0 VB project. It also consolidates the previously separate dlls into a single dll (InTheHand.Net.Personal.dll) which reduces the overall footprint to 83kb for Infrared, Bluetooth, Object Exchange and Forms functionality. If you are at MEDC and would like to see this version in action, Nick Landry will be using it as part of his session on Thursday at 11:15 "APP335 Tablet PCs and Smartphones: Working Hand-in-Hand to Enable Your Mobile Workforce".

I'm partly blogging to show I haven't fallen off the face of the earth (yesterday was a near miss though), and partly to plug MEDC2006 which is starting today in Las Vegas.

Being somewhat of a cheapskate I opted for an indirect flight here, the first leg, a mere 8 hours or so from London to Minneapolis went almost without a hitch (in fact we were early), it was all downhill from there. The second flight loaded up and taxied out towards the runway. We then had a message from the captain to tell us that his pre-flight checks indicated that the plane had no hydraulic fluid at all, which could be a bit of a bugger for steering the plane. Thankfully he decided that it would be a bad idea to try. So we then taxied back to the terminal and piled off the plane. Luckily there was another plane available, although because it was a subtly different flavour of 757 they had to reassign many of the seats. So that makes it my 16th plane in the last 2 months, I think after Vegas I'll have a bit of a break from air travel for a while!

So now although still tired I'm ready and looking forward to the cool stuff this week has to offer. I'll be helping out on the MVP Cabana on Wednesday and Thursday, and hanging out with fellow MVPs and OpenNETCF folk.

I really enjoyed DDD Day 2 on Saturday. I hope my session was useful and can help raise some interest in the possibilities (and challenges) provided by using Bluetooth for peer-to-peer networking. My slides are available to download here:-

BluetoothDDD2.ppt (107.5 KB)

Since I'm new to public speaking I'd really appreciate your feedback on the session so that I can improve my technique. There is an online feedback form on the DDD Day 2 website which I encourage all attendees to spend a few moments on.

It was difficult to choose which sessions to pick as there were a few clashes on my must-see list. Also some of the sessions had a limited capacity and required registration, which filled up very quickly. But those other sessions I did catch were very interesting, the Avalon and AJAX sessions were quite inspiring. Many of the other speakers and attendees are posting their thoughts on the event, there are also some photos.

The agenda for DDD Day II has now been published and for some crazy reason folks voted for my Bluetooth with .NET session :-) I'll be covering both the Bluetooth and Object Exchange components of the 32feet.NET suite, I wont touch on the IrDA part, but the code would be almost exactly the same. We'll walk through discovery, client and server connections and sending/receiving objects, hopefully with some audience participation.

It's a great priviledge to be selected along with such a great selection of excellent speakers so I have a lot to live up to! I now have to attempt to make my demonstration application absolutely bullet proof since it inexplicably failed when I gave a short session at the MVP Summit. But it wasn't my code at fault honestly, it worked fine during lunch afterwards (I had several witnesses), obviously a result of the the sinister EM radiation around the Redmond campus... :-)

[Via MP2KMag.com]

At PDC on Tuesday (13th) Microsoft will unveil a new collection of APIs for it's MSN services to be available from http://msdn.microsoft.com/msn, these will include:-

  • MSN Search Web Services
  • MSN Messenger Activity API (already available here)
  • MSN Virtual Earth API

The last item is interesting. Firstly it sounds like this will be a "proper" documented API, rather than the jscript hacks currently available. Secondly it is being offered free for both commercial and non-commercial use. It is interesting therefore to see how it stacks up against it's big brother Mappoint Web Service for simple commercial applications.

Speaking of which, the new version of Mappoint Web Service (4.0) will also be released at PDC. New features include support for polygons, some new map styles, and further extensions to the mapping coverage.

[Update] MWS 4.0 SDK is available:-

Its been a few days since Tech Ed in Amsterdam finished, and I'd intended to post a few of the highlights from the conference:-

Keynote

During the Keynote every delegate was given a handmade drum and encouraged to play along. This was certainly the most unusual conference idea I've ever witnessed. James Pratt and Steve Lombardi graced the stage in Smartphone and Pocket PC costumes to give their demonstration, hats off for them to be able to write and run code with their arms in a polystyrene suit!

Visual Studio now has a new tier of products. The Express lineup represents the entry level products for individual languages (C#, VB.NET, C++) and Web Developer. Also Sql Server Express replaces MSDE as a free database engine based on the Sql Server engine. These products are aimed at learners, hobbyists and academics who want a quick and simple tool to get started with learning managed development, and provide a stepping stone up to more full featured products. The Express products won't include the ability to developer with the Compact Framework (See a feature comparison here - http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/productinfo/productline/default.aspx)

Mappoint

Mappoint Location Server which was presented at MDC in San Francisco eariler in the year has been released in Europe. There are a couple of plugins for european operators including O2, with more hoped to follow in due course. Also the Mappoint web service will be getting a couple more mapping providers soon to add coverage for Greece and Australia. Steve Lombardi also indicated that they were looking to increase coverage in Asia and Eastern Europe. Another feature which will be added to Mappoint at some time in a future release is the ability to plot walking directions (currently the system plots routes based on driving), this means it will plot routes that can go the wrong way down one-way roads and take shortcuts through parks etc.

Windows Mobile

Neil Enns gave a great talk on POOM which revealed some of the features due in the next version of Windows Mobile to the COM object model. Neil even had handouts printed with the API showing these new interfaces. Probably the most important feature described was the ability to add custom fields right into the POOM store.

Robert Levy demonstrated separately some code using the Managed POOM APIs which will be in the future platform. This includes the functionality we know and love from POOM along with the ability to send Email and SMS messages. Along with managed POOM there will be managed APIs for Telephony, Configuration and Camera.

Ask The Experts

We got a number of comments on the Tablet PC booth that there wasn't an area for Windows Mobile or .NETCF developer questions. This was a shame considering the conference included an MDC strand. We actually had the biggest Ask The Experts booth for Tablet PC, but there were no other mobility topics covered. The only Smart Device was a 10ft long radio controlled airship teathered to the Visual Studio booth, which I thought was really cool :-)

Windows Mobile Pavillion

On the Windows Mobile pavillion there were a number of interesting devices on show. Sprint were showing the Voq and its associated developer kit. Orange had a couple of C500 devices, which are incredibly small and include Bluetooth and a camera and are running Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Motorola had both the MPx220 smartphone, which has a 1.3 megapixel camera with flash and Bluetooth, and the MPx device which is a Pocket PC Phone Edition which can be opened in both portrait and landscape orientations. This is an incredibly versatile device which is much smaller in real life than you might imagine, however more bulky than a smartphone device. Tom Tom were demonstrating the Smartphone version of their Navigator product which is due for release in September. There will be an update to the SDK to add support for this version. Details on functionality have not be released yet and the device at the show was running a rolling demo, not a working version.

Bags and Goodies

The conference bag was gigantic, a bright orange PVC affair which made delegates look like paper-boys. Thankfully during the keynote we were given instructions on how to wear the bag, given as a spoof of an airplane safety announcment. Now that electronic copies of all the slides, demos, sdks etc are readily available I wonder why it is necessary to carry quite that weight of stuff around. Personally I'd rather have a few DVD-ROMs with all of the content on. However I thought including the Compact Framework pocket guide was a really neat way of introducing delegates to managed development for devices.

Venue and Transport

The venue was enormous and one of these exhibition centres which is like a maze inside. Mind you there are some advantages in getting lost in some of the quieter areas, there is generally more snack food left! Transport to and from Schipol airport was provided for all attendees along with a travel pass for the entire week for all delegates. This allowed unlimited use of the metro, tram and bus system around Amsterdam.

In the last couple of weeks I've been down to Microsoft's UK headquarters in Reading as a member of the judging panel for this interesting Tablet PC competition.

Entrants were given the ability to purchase a subsidised Tablet PC and develop an application which they felt was perfect for the Tablet PC platform. The first week we looked over many entries aimed at a whole range of vertical markets, this was reduced to a shortlist of 10 entrants who came in this week to give a short presentation to the panel and get a chance to explain their projects in more detail and demonstrate some of the Tablet PC specific features.

There can be only one winner of course, they will receive the chance to travel to Microsoft's HQ in Redmond and meet with the Tablet PC team. I can't tell you who that is yet as it will be announced at the Tablet PC event in Heathrow next Tuesday. It was a really interesting experience to see the range of things people are planning to use Tablet applications for.

So its been two weeks since MDC in San Francisco, in which time I've been back to the UK and then out to Seattle for the MVP summit. Today the article I wrote summarising the event has gone live on Pocket PC Thoughts and you can view it here:-

Its difficult to cover everything because there were multiple tracks running simultaneously and I also spent some time helping out in the Hands-On labs and Ask the Experts area. However hopefully I've managed to cover all the major points raised at the event, though of course I'd love to hear your feedback!

So at the MVP summit I made the mistake of showing off my party trick, which unfortunately Neil caught on camera. If you check out his blog post you can enter a caption competition to win an item from the OpenNETCF store.

You'd better be quick in entering before my legal team forces Neil to withdraw the picture :-)

I've got back home from MDC, my immediate task is to clear the backlog of emails and serious sleep deprivation! I'll also be pulling together all my notes on the event for a Smartphone / Pocket PC Thoughts article.

The event included a great mixture of short term and longer-term announcements. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition brings support for a greater range of form factors for devices. After some deliberation I decided not to get my iPaq 2210 flashed as the beta image excluded any Bluetooth support, which would cripple the device which I use day-to-day. I have of course installed the Emulator images to target the platform. Longer term, Visual Studio 2005, .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and SQL Server Mobile are shaping up to be a powerful set of tools and technologies, and I can't wait to play with the preview version of Visual Studio 2005 that was handed out!

Kevin Lisota has just posted about his excitement for the upcoming MDC in San Francisco. It's shaping up to be a really interesting event and of course OpenNETCF will be providing an exciting session:-

"CLI345 - Developing Real-world Smart Device Applications with Visual Studio .NET 2003, .NET Compact Framework and OpenNETCF SmartDevice Framework
The .NET Compact Framework is a powerful tool for a mobile developer. To fully utilize its potential in a real-world application, a developer needs access to the native API and intrinsic Windows CE controls. OpenNETCF SmartDevice framework is designed to address these needs."

There will also be a number of worldwide events to follow offering MDC content nearer to you.
